Cozy Games for Mac: How to Find Ones That Run Well

Delvestead · · 5 min read

There are plenty of cozy games for Mac, but the store pages don’t make them easy to find. The quick answer: filter Steam by macOS, check the Mac App Store and Apple Arcade, and start with well-known picks like Stardew Valley, A Short Hike, Unpacking, Spiritfarer, Dorfromantik and Terraria. If you want something free you can leave running while you work, try Delvestead, a cozy idle roguelite that runs in the browser and as a Mac app.

What makes a game “cozy”?

There is no official genre, but players use the word for games that share a few traits:

  • Low pressure. Losing costs little, and there is rarely a timer shouting at you.
  • A home to come back to. A farm, a cabin, a town or a room that grows as you play.
  • Small, repeatable goals. Plant, craft, decorate, then do it again a little better.
  • Soft art and sound. Pixel art, warm colors and calm music are common.

A game can be cozy and still have fights or bosses. What matters is that the loop feels relaxing to come back to.

How do I know a game runs well on my Mac?

Most frustration with Mac gaming comes from buying something that only runs on Windows. Check these before you buy:

Where What to look for
Steam store page The Apple logo next to the price, and “macOS” in the system requirements
Mac App Store Built for Mac by definition; check “Designed for iPad” games separately
Apple Arcade One subscription, many cozy games, all made for Apple devices
The game’s own site A .dmg download, ideally signed and notarized so it opens without warnings
The browser Games you play at a link need no install and run on any Mac

On an Apple silicon Mac, a “Universal” or “Apple silicon” app runs natively. Intel-only games usually run through Rosetta 2, often fine for small 2D games, but read recent reviews first.

Which cozy games are on Mac?

These are well-known games with Mac versions, a good place to start:

Game What you do
Stardew Valley Farm, fish, mine and befriend a small town
A Short Hike Climb a mountain on a small island, at your own pace
Unpacking Unpack boxes and learn a life from the objects
Spiritfarer Run a boat and care for spirits before letting them go
Dorfromantik Place tiles to grow a calm landscape
Terraria Dig, build and craft in a 2D world
Delvestead Build a homestead while your hero explores a dungeon on their own

Check each store page for the current version and system requirements, since they change with updates.

What is Delvestead?

Delvestead is the game we make, so read this part with that in mind. It is a cozy idle roguelite: your hero explores the dungeon alone while you look after the homestead.

  1. Pack. At the road sign, pick tools, armor, food and potions.
  2. Delve. The hero explores each level by themselves: chops trees, mines ore, hunts, eats when hurt and finds the exit. A cycle is three days and three nights, and nights pay 1.5x the loot.
  3. Bring it home. Loot is banked when the third night ends. Then smelt, craft, cook and farm at the cabin before the next run.

The cozy part lives at home: a log cabin and a fenced farm in 16 px top-down pixel art, stations you build as furniture, crops that grow in real time and chests that fill up. The roguelite part lives below: nine biomes, each ending in a boss like Old Tusk, and gear made from 56 materials. Gear is never lost when the hero falls, so a bad run costs you a little loot, not your progress.

Because the hero plays on their own, it suits the way many people use a Mac: leave it in a window, check in between tasks, and turn on loop mode so the next run leaves by itself.

How do I play it on a Mac?

Two ways, both free:

  • In the browser. Open Play in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Nothing to install.
  • As a Mac app. Download the .dmg: a Universal app for Apple silicon and Intel, signed and notarized by Apple.

With a free account, your characters sync between the browser, your Mac and a Windows PC. The cloud saves guide shows how to link a device. New to the game? The beginner guide covers the first runs.
